Questions About the Waterford to New Ross Greenway?
Everything you need to know about cycling Ireland's most scenic old railway viaduct trail
Absolutely—it's one of the reasons we love this route. The 42km greenway follows an old railway line, which means it's incredibly flat with no steep hills. Most of our riders come back after a 5-10 year break and find they can comfortably manage 15-20km in a session. We always recommend starting with a shorter section and building up from there.
Most people complete the full 42km route in 3-4 hours at a relaxed pace, including a lunch break. We usually break it into two days for our guided tours, cycling about 20km each morning with plenty of stops to admire the historic viaducts and enjoy the landscape. You can absolutely do shorter sections—many riders do just 10-15km and enjoy it just as much.
The viaducts are perfectly safe and one of the most beautiful parts of the route. They were originally built as part of the Waterford & Limerick Railway in the 1890s, and the trail now uses them as part of the greenway infrastructure. You get stunning views from the viaducts, and the surface is smooth tarmac the whole way. Just take your time and enjoy the experience.
You can do either. Several local operators in Waterford and New Ross offer bike rentals, and we can recommend places that have comfortable hybrid or road bikes suited to greenway cycling. If you're bringing your own bike, we suggest having it serviced beforehand—nothing fancy, just ensure the tyres are properly inflated and the brakes work smoothly.
Bring water (at least 1-2 litres), some snacks or a packed lunch, sunscreen, and a light rain jacket—Irish weather can change quickly. Comfortable padded cycling shorts or leggings make a big difference for longer rides. We also recommend a basic repair kit with a spare inner tube, pump, and multi-tool, though our guided tours always carry spares.
We keep groups to a maximum of 8-10 riders so you actually get to know people and our guide can chat with everyone. It's not like a big commercial tour where you're one of fifty cyclists. You'll have plenty of opportunities to stop and chat, ask questions, and really soak in the local heritage and stories along the way.
